Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Law at the University of Baghdad, Professor Dr. Ali Hadi Atiya, the Department of Criminal Law organized an international online scientific symposium entitled “The Spread of Drugs: Risks and Solutions” on Thursday, October 23, 2025, with the participation of a distinguished group of professors and experts specializing in criminal law from both inside and outside Iraq.
The symposium aimed to raise awareness about the phenomenon of drug proliferation, discuss the role of law in its prevention, and promote cooperation between legal, health, and social institutions to curb the worsening of this phenomenon. It also highlighted the most effective solutions and interventions to address it.
The event was part of the Third International Scientific Conference on Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, in which the College participates alongside Arab academic and judicial partners, as part of scientific and research cooperation to confront the legal and social challenges associated with the spread of drugs.
The symposium concluded with several important recommendations, including:
1.Establishing an independent national body to combat drugs, responsible for research activities and developing a comprehensive national plan for prevention and treatment.
2.Updating related legislation, most importantly the Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law No. (25) of 2017, to make it preventive and therapeutic in nature, focusing on long-term investment in the fields of development and public health.
